Pravin Kumar Padwal is an IPS officer of 2004 batch, He is Additional Commissioner of Police south region Mumbai. He was born in a small village in Pune district. He had completed his qualification from science stream. He had cleared civil service exam in third attempt and allotted Maharashtra cader of 2004 batch. He is a experienced police officer. Padwal started a police public participation from the beginning. After becoming an IPS, he felt himself proud that he is a police officer, at present, peace prevails in South Mumbai as a symbols. In an exclusive Interview with India Unbound Magazine, Pravin Padwal shared his experience at various postings and his duties.
Please tell us about your school, college days and where were you born and bought up?
I was born in a small village of Pune district. I have completed my schooling there. I completed my engineering from RIT, Islampur. After that I received master’s degree from MANIT Bhopal, and then I worked in couple of companies for sometime and started preparations for UPSC exam. After 3rd attempt I got selected and got 2004 batch IPS.
Did you always wanted to become a police officer?
My wish was to become an IAS officer but no regret. I feel proud of being an IPS officer by merit.
What are your memories of 2004 IPS batch, Do you still meet your batch-mates ?
There were 6 companions in my batch from Maharashtra cadre, out of which 4 are working in Mumbai today. We meet our batch mates frequently and as now its very easy to communicate with our friends through social media. We meet in seminar, official meeting and occasionally we refresh all old memory that time.
What advice do you want to give the students who wish to become IAS and IPS?
I think social attitude towards social issues is one of the quality which you need to come in civil services, your inner willing to work for betterment of the nation and social quality is the most important quality to become an IAS or IPS.
What are the major challenges you are facing as a Addl. CP South Region?
Mumbai is the economic capital of the country even it is a densely populated and large scale commercial area & even the city is surrounded by the sea the biggest challenge is the safety & security of the people. The security of Mumbaikars is always our prime duty and it is continuously moving forward.
You were DCP (EOW) in Mumbai CP office, kindly share your experience?
I had completed 2 year in DCP (EOW) Mumbai. Where I got to know how to investigate economic offences & in many of the cases law are other than regular laws like major criminal laws. Some important cases I supervised in which property of the accused where seized Particularly in MPID cases investment related cases one of the good tenure I had.
In April you have arrested at least 10 MNS worker for creating ruckus at sale of Pakistan brand showroom “ZARA” at lower parel? What was the reason behind the ruckus?
At least 10 (MNS) activists were arrested for allegedly creating ruckus in a Zara showroom of apparel at Lower Parel area here to oppose the sale of ‘Pakistani brands’ of clothes.
Those arrested included an MNS corporator Datta Narvankar and three women, who were later released on bailThe activists barged into the showroom inside Phoenix mall know of the outlet selling the apparel and accessories of ‘Pakistani brands.The activists shouted slogans against Pakistan and threw out the stock of Pakistani brand garments, he said. the activists also warned the shop management not to sell the cloths of Pakistani brands.The personnel from NM Joshi Marg police station rushed to the showroom and detained 10 MNS activists. They were brought to the police station and subsequently arrested, he said adding they were later released on bail. A case under section 143 (unlawful assembly) of IPC was lodged and the probe is on, he added.
Tell us about the working style of Mumbai Commissioner Datta Padsalgikar?
Sir is very supportive he knows what are the issues in which he gives appropriate diections to the officers amd guide us what should be done. He is a great officer, very knowledgeable, expert in solving crime we get to learn lots of things from him.
After 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks how much Mumbai police is well equipped to fight against terrorist attack?
We are much better prepared to face such inflitators. our police stations, police officers & even me are ready to give quick responce. We are well equipped to fight now.
Maximum VIP movements in your region also major head of the department Business House,CM House,governor House &Mantralaya situated in south region,it is not easy to manage all with your daily routine work, kindly comment?
Briefing the officer on time then taking the review for that, sometimes personally I visit there. That is the way I function and my DCP’s are also good, they also keep everything under control.
How do you think we can create a strong nation? Whatare the factors which are affecting the peach and harmony in India?
Maintaining humble harmony is importance thing, everybody should follow the law as well. If there is peace and harmony in India, only then, India as a nation can go forward.
Most populated area also comes in south region like bhindi bazar Crawford market Bombay stock exchange etc, how you handle all together?
We have undertaking community outlet programme where we regularly conduct meetings with people visiting from different areas on monthly bases that is the way we keep being in touch with people.
Have you ever experienced any political pressure in your work?
I have done my work very transparently, so far there is no politician pressure raised on me.
How are you planning to increase the participation of people in police activities?
We are conducting regular meetings with the people & we are trying to bring the youth along with the police from school & colleges by endrolling as voluntaries.
Who is your role model in police service?
Till now I have worked with very good senior officials, I have interact with lots of police officers there is not a particular person who can be my role model. I have learned many things from my seniors and well as junior officers. Each and everyone of them is a role model for me.
What are your future aspirations?
I am a police man in which I have to increase my skills and knowledge. Being prepared for all this time to end terrorism is entirely my duty to be dedicated to service for the country.
What message do you want to give to your department and Mumbai by India Unbound?
Support the police, become eyes and ears of the police, if anything is going wrong, then let the information immediately come to the police.
